To get the all original style for my Aw11, I bought an original radio for it. The seller couldn’t tell me if it was in working condition.
It was cheap enough for me to take the risk and buy it anyway.
As I wanted to install it in the MR2, I found that the wiring in the car weirdly didn’t match the radio. But it didn’t seem that the wiring had been modified, which was kind of odd.
Anyway, to test the radio without hacking up the loom, I wired it on my co ffee table and played around with it.
It turned on, the radio works, tried putting in a tape, and the motorized deck loade d the tape as it should, but the it didn’t play. It wouldn’t come out anymore, either. So I opened up the radio, took the tape out manually, and tried again, this time it worked as intended, turning to tape mode, loading the tape, playing, and even the side switch button worked. Unloading worked. W hen I tried again, the tape would load and then, nothing. I took the tape out manually again, but now it doesn’t load anymore. What seems to be the forward/reverse driver heated up and started smelling.
My guess is that at least the driver is toast. Question is: is this re
pai
rable ? Would I be able to do that, and would any shop do that for a reasonable price ?
The part itself (lb1640) is cheap, but I wonder if that would resolve my issue

So, the radio-and-amp section is still working? So, we’re certain that the amp section is still OK?
It’s worth trying to swap the driver out— although you’d be asking yourself WHY the current levels got to the point of torching the driver module... are the mechanism motor and reel drive motors dragging? internally shorted? jammed?

Radio and amp section still work. If I remove the tape section it would still work as a radio. But the main goal was to have a working tape player and an added bluetooth module

Yeah. I get that. I was just trying to explore whether it was only the single motor drive module that had gone out, or whether there were broader issues with power and motors/actuators.
You could replace the module and discover that was a symptom, not the disease, which commonly happens. Those modules are pretty robust, so something likely caused it to over-current.
-Used to do this for my day job

Are there ( leaf) switches attached to the cassette mechanism ? Might have had contacts that need a little exercise too

I'm currently trying to move every movable part back and forth, hoping it will somehow solve the issue

I’m currently trying to move every mechanical part, trying to get it into a default position of som e kind. Maybe getting it to work again if the compos ent isn't burnt

Taking things apart and putting them together fixes many things. Throw a little cleaning at it while you’ve got it apart.
